Kohinoor Hospital organizes workshop for sewage and sanitation workers to draw attention towards the ill-effects of tobacco usage
( From left to right) Dr. Indrajeet Chakraborty, Head of Administration, Kohinoor Hospital and Mr. Baba Patil, Community officer ‘L’ Ward addressed more then 50 sewage workers gathered at Kohinoor Hospital for workshop on ill-effects of Tobacco.
Kohinoor Hospital, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, organized a unique event for the city’s sewage and sanitation workers, occupied at mucky sites like manholes, garbage dumps, sewers etc.
Being at extremely filthy and unhealthy conditions, these workers readily fall for the consumption of tobacco products like bidi and paan masala besides other dangerous intoxicating substances. Sewage and sanitation workers take up tobacco and other life threatening substances to remain mentally indifferent to the pathetic nature of their jobs. This consumption ultimately exposes them to deadly diseases like cancer. Kohinoor Hospital held a workshop for these workers along with a team of Oncologists, Psychiatrists, Dieticians and with Dr. Sanjay Phunde, Medical Health officer, ‘L’ Ward Kurla, BMC to orient them about maintaining a healthy life and staying away from tobacco.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Indrajeet Chakraborty, Head of Administration, Kohinoor Hospital, Kurla said, “There are around 1.2 million sewage and sanitation workers in India, who become tobacco addicts while working at wretched sites. Kohinoor Hospital has taken this special initiative to address the health threats these workers face while keeping our surroundings clean.”
