Wendell Rodricks institutes cash award for KASHISH Poster design contest

International contest for the official poster of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2014 is now open.

India’s top fashion designer Wendell Rodricks has instituted a cash award of Rs 20,000 for the winner of the KASHISH International Poster Design Contest – the competition to design the poster and look of the forthcoming fifth edition of Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival.

Kashish – South Asia’s biggest and India’s only mainstream LGBT film festival – which was recently voted as one of the Top 5 LGBT Film Festivals in the World, is scheduled to be held between May 21-25, 2014.

Wendell Rodricks, who has judged and picked the winner of the international festival poster design contest for the past two years, has decided to institute a cash award of Rs 20,000 for the winner this year.

“At a time when the LGBT community is on the brink of historic happenings in India, it gives me great pleasure to support the Kashish poster competition in the hope that film will play an important part in restoring dignity to our community. The powerful medium of cinema can play a major role in our cause and I hope we use Kashish as a platform for our united voice”, said Wendell Rodricks.

According to the organisers of Kashish they were looking for an international look for the fifth edition of the festival to go with its theme – `Dare to Dream’. The film festival’s theme is a salute to the undying spirit of the Indian queer community whose long struggle for decriminalization of same-sex relationships recently suffered a huge setback when the Supreme Court recriminalised homosexuality.

“We believe that films and art are powerful mediums to bring about social change, and we will use the reach and spread that KASHISH has already established, as one of  Mumbai’s important film festival, to rally public opinion towards equality and dignity for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. We will use KASHISH platform to advocate and sensitize the larger public about LGBT issues”, said Sridhar Rangayan, festival director.

The KASHISH International Poster Design Contest has become an important competition, receiving entries from across the world. While the 2012 winner was a young student S Ayyappa from Hyderabad, the 2013 winner was a young graphic designer Prachi Patil-Kotkar from Mumbai.

The winning design will feature on billboards, print and online advertisements, catalogue cover, banners, cinema slides and delegate cards.

Submission deadline for the poster contest is February 15, 2014. Rules and FAQs of the contest are at  http://kashishmiqff.blogspot.in
