Hats Off to Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar at T Series for continuing the legacy of Gulshan Kumar in backing and promoting meaningful cinema. “Thappad “ will leave a long lasting impact Loud & Clear by giving women like Amrita the Love, Respect and Dignity that they So Very Much Deserve.
There’s a Well known saying “Making Mountain Out Of Molehill “ , so easily said but not applicable in this case.
Just imagine getting Slapped hard what we call Thappad when you least expect it and that too when you are in the midst of a celebration party with family, friends and guests around by some one in whom you have invested your whole life and you get the shock of your life leaving you numb, hopeless and speechless nonetheless !!!!! That in short is the crux of the story of the film “Thappad “ which is based on a true incident.
On the surface of it the film has nothing, no subject per say except for the inner turmoil which is brewing in the mind of Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) fighting for her self respect and the constant brain washing that keeps on happening by the near and dear ones to make her understand and adopt an attitude of forgive and forget and move on in life.
But however hard she tries she’s unable to relent given her situation. She could forsake everything but not her self respect which she feels has been virtually trampled upon. Now when no love is lost and left for that matter where does she go from here and so follows the whole drama where in after she is able to reconcile with herself. Taapsee Pannu as Amrita’s monologue in the end where she addresses her whole family from both side is indeed a treat to watch getting to know her plight and the way she was handling herself by giving vent to all the emotions bundled in her and wanting to get out.
Taapsee has been able to display all this plus her vulnerability which is a great and wonderful experience to be part of as a lay person while you are sitting in the darkness of the theatre watching the whole scenario unfold. Taapsee has evolved big time and is a talent to watch out for in coming days.
Highly engaging drama sensitively handled by Anubhav Sinha who has been able to hold on to a “Thappad “ for 141 minutes with full intensity and intent. Though the film tends to get a bit slow in between but on the contrary given the plot it would have lost out on the Emotions and fluidity of the narrative had the editing been fast.
Such is the delicacy of the matter that however hard you may try but you just can’t avoid getting carried away with the character. Anubhav Sinha has gone into the depth of the characterisation of Amruta (Amu) so convincingly portrayed by Taapsee Pannu that it gets as realistic as it could get.
Taapsee has put in her heart and soul by living Amu to near perfection.
This film is an example of and certainly an example for women of today’s time who will no longer take things lying down and especially when they give their % They will expect the same.
Taapsee Pannu leads all the way with the help of the ensemble cast Pavail Gulati who plays Vikram , Amrita ‘s husband, parents Kumud Mishra, Ratna Pathak Shah , Tanvi Azmi and above all the best neighbour Dia Mirza , maidservant Geetika Vidya giving their best shot and adding to the smoothness of the overall action happening.
Thappad will surely leave you Shocked with the numbness of Amrita (Amy) , Her state of mind, and the after effects of the incident happening.
