(MUMBAI) – In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Bollywood superstar Sridevi gets candid about her decision to quit films in favour of motherhood, her special relationship with her daughters and her triumphant return to the silver screen with the surprise hit English Vinglish.
“I’ve been working since the age of four. I wanted to experience family life,” explains the star in the interview, about why she gave up a movie career.
When she agreed to finally return with English Vinglish, the journey felt new to her, thanks to the presence of her daughters by her side. “All I was worried about was if the kids wanted to see me in glamorous clothes. But when they saw English Vinglish, they forgot everything,” she admits. The actress’s younger daughter Khushi chimes in, “When we were at the supermarket one day, a lady started thanking mum, saying how the film has changed her life as she couldn’t speak good English.”
Off-screen, the actress reveals that she is like any other mum, enjoying shopping and watching movies with her children. “I can’t stay away from them for long,” she says.

Excerpts from the interview:

ON HER DAUGHTERS’ DIFFERING PERSONALITIES

“Jahnvi is more like me. She was a calm kid. I’d get her ready for her evening walk, put her in a pram and take off for a bath for 45 minutes. She’d make no fuss. Khushi’s daddy’s girl and full of masti. She’s also independent and makes a lot of demands.”

ON JAHNVI’S ACTING AMBITIONS

“A few years down the line, she may say she wants to act. I must be prepared to respond to that. Being an actress is not a joke. It’s not an easy profession. Ideally, I’d like her to get married at 20.”

ON PUTTING FAMILY FIRST

““When I was young, I’d think about getting married to a handsome man who would take care of me, but I was too involved in work. When I got married to Boneyji and was expecting Jhanu (Jahnvi), I knew that I had to give her all my time. There are mothers who manage both work and home, but I guarantee they can’t do it hundred per cent.”

JAHNVI AND KHUSHI ON THEIR MOM, THE SUPERSTAR

Jahnvi: “After watching English Vinglish, many of my friends called up their mothers and apologised for the times they have misbehaved.”

Khushi: “I cried every time I watched it. I can’t watch mamma cry.”
BONEY KAPOOR ON SRIDEVI’S COMEBACK

“She’s an excellent mother; we can’t do without her. She has always made decisions on her terms. I’m so proud that she has made a comeback. Now that the kids are older, she has more time to work.”
