Singapore’s Esplanade Welcomes Anupam Kher’s ‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha’
Play: Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha
Venue: Esplanade Theatre, Singapore
Date: Friday, 29th May, 2015
Duration: 2 hours
Description: Within eight weeks after its smashing premiere in Mumbai, Anupam Kher’s latest production, Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha comes to Singapore’s waterfront architectural marvel, the Esplanade Theatre. Kher shares the stage with Neena Gupta in the play which has been written and directed by Rakesh Bedi.
Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha has had a dozen houseful performances in the short span, arguably a record in its own right, and has never been performed outside the Mumbai region. With its Esplanade Theatre performance on May 29, Singapore becomes the first international venue for the play, which is largely a walk down memory lane for two friends. Set in New Delhi, it is about two lovers who drifted apart for no apparent reason. They meet 35 years later and try to discover the truth behind their separation. “It is not a love story, but a story about relationships, misunderstandings and our awkwardness in dealing with the truth. It’s amazing how someone who meant the world to you sometimes turns into merely an acquaintance over time. We often skirt delicate issues by saying ‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha,’ says Kher.
“I am very fortunate to have been offered this play and with such a talented team, no less,” says Neena Gupta.
“I wanted two mature and accomplished actors to play these roles. I could not find anybody better than AnupamKher and Neena Gupta who could justify the challenges,” says Rakesh Bedi.
Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha has been produced by Actor Prepares, Mumbai.
