Maneesh Sharma after Band Baja Baarat, coming back to his own forte and that too with a Desi touch is not only refreshing and engrossing fare but brings forth the mindset of today’s youth, be it in Metros or Semi Urban settings of a Rajasthan. Here in Shuddh Desi Romance, the characters too belong to the tribes of Wedding Planners, Caterers, Baaratis, Rental Baaratis ( a new concept for the uninitiated, but a regular practice in the area as it is made to be understood ), and the lanes and by lanes of the middle class locality in the belt, which happens to be the setting.
There is no big story as such but to the credit of writer Jaideep Sahni,who has also written the dialogue & lyrics, has woven the whole goings on in a behavioral pattern of story telling where all the main three lead players & Raghu(Sushant Singh Rajput) a tourist guide & part time rental Baarati during marriage season, Gayatri a young,beautiful,feisty girl also doing part time rental Baarati role to earn extra money & third one Tara(Vaani Kapoor),a prospective Bride who again due to situations in her life keeps on clashing into each other, call it a coincidence or the beautiful structure of the story, that everybody keeps on justifying their role in the whole scenario. To help them get out of the mess is our dear Goel Saab (Rishi Kapoor) who runs a business of wedding planner & caterer. Now how do you tackle such a tricky subject? But Maneesh has done quiet a good job in sticking to the scenario of giving free hand to his principle cast to just play act their roles as per the situation & the end result is riot of Shuddh Desi Romance with Desi Tadka, hot and spicy with 27 kisses between the three characters, Raghu -Gayatri and Raghu -Tara.
The whole Desi romcom saga is not just plain good feel factor extravaganza, but a very strong message is strongly conveyed that the youth today is very fickle minded & having the options of being spoilt for choices, are not able to take important decisions & get into tricky relationships & situations & become victim of their own follies.
Superlative performances by Parineeti Chopra, who it seems is growing into a wonderful natural performer sans any pretensions whatsoever. A Very pleasing sight to watch her perform on the screen. A born natural! I shall say! Sushant Singh Rajput in just his second outing has got into the skin of the character & the chemistry between him & Parineeti is there to watch for. Great performance, especially in the song sequence in their interaction & interplaying – too good! Vaani Kapoor has equally lent good support as the third angle to the triangle, very confident debut. Her charming persona adds to the Spice & Tadka element of the film. What can you say about Rishi Kapoor, he is just wonderful & his special soft corner for Raghu as a father figure is very very endearing to watch?
But the real star of the film is the music of Sachin-Jigar for the most chartbuster and lovable songs! Wow! How they fit into the Scenario & carry forward the narration lyrically to its ultimate end. Sachin Jigar gets the mix of Rajasthani folk & western Rock Jam, just in right doses to create the desired effect.”Gulabi” song is as good as paying tribute to the pink city Jaipur which is the city of Shuddh Desi romance. Tere mere beech main Kya Hai song leaves you totally mesmerized (sung by Sunidhi Chauhan & Mohit Chauhan) is the flavor of the film.
Jaideep Sahni for sure has weaved the playful mood into the lyrics which helps push the narrative in its natural progression.Chanchal Mann Ati Random by Divya Kumar adds to the mood with Desi beats & western rock. All in all a very touching & consuming Desi drama, without any high end emotional outpourings & yet every sentiments & emotions are taken care of by director Maneesh Sharma.
Aditya Chopra & Yash Raj films have yet again proved that strong content is the ultimate Star, which inturn has made all the people who have had the fortune to work with Yash Raj Films, Stars from Nobodies.
