Sandook marks Sumeet Raghvan’s Debut in Marathi films

First Period Comedy in Marathi releases across the state Marathi cinema, of late, seems to have come of age with a new breed of directors exploring different genres with great success. Besides making their mark at national awards with admirable consistency, this new age Marathi cinema is also raking moolah at the box office. Be it a teenage love story or a court room satire, audience is lapping up every good film that is being made today. This, in turn, is encouraging filmmakers to explore different subjects with creative freedom. One such filmmaker is Atul Kale who has been consistently treating audience with different genres without sacrificing that crucial element of any film ENTERTAINMENT.

After trying his hands in family drama (Matichya Chuli), RomCom (Ticha Baap Tyacha Baap), comedy (Shahanpan Dega Deva) and Social (BaalKadu), Atul is presenting, for the first time on Marathi silver screen, a Period Comedy. Titled ‘Sandook’, it stars Sumeet Raghvan who is playing a lead on silver screen for the first time in his 3 decades of career. This, incidentally, also marks his debut in Marathi films. The film released across the state of Maharashtra on Friday, 5th June to a thunderous applause.

Vishwajit Gaikwad and Mandar Keni are producing Atul’s dream of 12 years under their banner ‘Orangen Entertainment’. ‘Sandook’ is a Period Comedy set in 1940s. It skillfully blends history with fantasy with ample doses of humour.

Atul says, “‘Sandook’ is a dream come true for me. For 12 years I had nourished this dream. In fact, I wanted it to be my first film but the destiny had something else in store for me. However, the wait was worth it as I could work with so many talented people on the screen and behind the screen also. My actors, technicians, everybody made this dream of mine their own. And last but not the least, I must thank producers Vishwanath Gaikwad and Mandar Keni.

‘Sandook’ is not an easy film to make as it involves a lot of VFX and also a genre of Period Comedy is new for us.”

Equally elated Sumeet says, “Atul is my childhood buddy and I am extremely glad to be part of his dream of many years. I am also happy that I chose ‘Sandook’ as my first Marathi film. There had been many offers all these years but I was really waiting for something like ‘Sandook’.”

“After the success of our first film ‘Yedyanchi Jatra’, we were looking for a challenging subject which would establish Orangen Entertainment as a credible banner. When we came across ‘Sandook’, we decided then and there to produce this film. I must mention Ashish Raikar and Vidyadhar Bhave also who were instrumental in the making of this film,” commented Vishwajit Gaikwad.

Besides Sumeet Raghvan, it also stars Bhargavi Chirmule, Sharad Ponkshe, Rahul Mehendale, Arun Nalawde and Brandon J. Hill. Written by Atul Kale, Ashish Raikar and Subodh Khanolkar, cinematography is done by Ajit Reddy. Ace editor Sarvesh Parab has done the editing while Ajit–Sameer has composed chartbusters songs of ‘Sandook’ written by Guru Thakur.
