“The Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth”- Tibetan Yoga & 5 Rites decoded by Razia Patel

Dr.Razia Rustam Patel Born and brought up in Nairobi, Kenya, in a one to one dialogue, with Hemant Sanganee  speaks about her initiation into the Art of Tibetan Yoga & the Impact & Effect it has on her over a period of years.

1 ) So Razia How- When & Where did you get to know about Tibetan Yoga?

I have been going to the Siddha yoga ashram since many years and that is where I met a fellow devotee who had had 2 heart attacks. The doctors had asked him to exercise but he was too busy & lazy to exercise . When he had the 3rd attack it was so bad that he had to go through surgery.
After he recovered a little he came to the ashram and met 2 lamas who were also devotees, and they taught him the 5 Tibetan Rites. He started doing them regularly and started regaining his health, he was able to lose weight,  his memory improved and he was able to now walk & felt more energetic. My husband & I met him 6 months after his last attack and we were amazed to see this man, who could not even walk was now running fit. He looked so enthusiastic, energetic and full of life. We asked him how he regained his health so quickly and he told us that he had been doing Tibetan yoga . He tried to teach us the 5 rites but could not & recommended the book ” Ancient secret of fountain of youth” by Peter Kelder. We search but could not find the book anywhere in India .
Then when I went to America, I found the book, Cd and also the yoga institute where I learnt this yoga.
2 ) What was the impact it had on you & how did it affect you ?
When I learnt Tibetan 5 Rites, in 1999 I had severe spondelosis.
I started doing the rites and within 2 weeks my pain was almost gone & I was full of extra energy
I was very impressed with this and decided to bring this yoga to India and took a further  training on how to teach this yoga.
When I returned to Mumbai, I shared this yoga with my friends,& colleagues and every one felt extra energy, & their aches & pain was reduced. Among them was a journalist who benefited a lot. So she wrote an article in the Times of India mentioning how she had  lost weight & her back was cured. She mentioned my no and 100s of people called me and wanted to learn Tibetan yoga & I started teaching this yoga to the public.
3 ) Why is it different from other forms of Yoga ?
Traditional Hatha yoga has hundreds of asans and each asan works on a different part of our body.So many asans take a minimum of 6 months to an year to learn.
Each session of doing these asans will take at least 45 minutes to an hour daily.
It takes only  a few hours to learn Tibetan yoga .You can do Tibetan yoga in just 15 minutes daily.
Tibetan Yoga works on all the 4 systems of our body – respiratory system, cardeo vascular system, digestive system and the nervous system.

4 ) Why is it called the 5 Secrets of the Lamas- Yoga for Eternal youth ?
Tibetan Yoga is the union of mind, body and spirit, & is based on Buddhism. The Godly Tibetan Lamas believe in living each moment to the fullest, i.e. to be consciously and totally present in every moment. These Lamas lived for 100 years and more but looked & felt like they were 50 years old. Their secret of eternal youth & vitality was a set of 5 simple yogic exercises called the ‘5 Rites ‘ & therefore they are called the yoga for eternal youth.
5 ) What is the origin & how does the 5 Rites work?
The 5 Tibetan rites were developed by the Lamas in the monestaries in Tibet & the world did not know about them.In 1930 they were brought to the west by a retired British army officer, Corl. Bredford. who lived with the Lamas & practiced the 5 Rites for 3 years and returned looking many years younger. His friend, Peter Kelder, recorded the experiences of Bredford in a book called  Millions of people started doing the 5 Rites with amazing experiences of regaining youth, vitality, & of being cured of depression, arthritis, backache, diabetes, & digestive, respiratory, & heart problems.
6 ) What is the time duration & Rules & Regulations?
It takes only 3 hours to learn Tibetan yoga & meditation. After you learn the yoga you are given an instruction book and a CD which has the same instructions as you learn in the class. this supports your daily practice of Tibetan yoga in JUST 15 min.
Yoga should be done before a meal at any time of the day. If you have eaten, you do yoga after 90 min.
You can do this yoga at home, at office or even in a hotel room if you travel. Therefore this yoga is very popular with people who are stressed, who work very hard and have very little time to exercise .The CD & instruction book helps you to do the Tibetan yoga without attending classes or being supervised.
7 ) Who can do it & who cannot?
Any one from age 8 to 80 years can do Tibetan yoga. Only people who have Parkinson’s disease,    & pregnant women should not do these exercises. These exercises improves concentration,& memory so they are very helpful to the students.

In today’s fast life with many challenges and competition, people are very stressed and over worked. They are all suffering from stress related ailments and backaches and lack of energy at work and home. Relationships are deteriorating with colleagues , spouses and children. The wrong  food, irregular eating & sleeping habits and no physical exercise are taking a toll of both adults and youngsters.
12 ) What do you strongly recommend as a solution?
People want to stay fit but are too busy or too lazy to exercise.
Tibetan yoga is a short cut to good health – it is doable, & practical exercise routine. You can learn it in a few hours in a day and every one has 15 minutes daily to do the exercises.
Our mission is to share the great Gift of Tibetan yoga ( that has made us happy and healthy) with as many people as possible.
We want to help people to get over their aches and pain and to make their bodies and minds so strong that they do not suffer detrimental effects of stress.
We want people to feel happy, healthy, young & energetic so they can work more efficiently and enjoy life to the full.
13 ) You may have had many testimony but something special or exceptional you would like to speak about ?
In the past 14 years that I have been teaching Tibetan yoga, I have 100s of people whose backache has been cured, whose arthritis pain, diabetes, blood pressure & stomach problems have reduced.
But what is most gratifying is when my students write back and say that they feel more energetic, feel more enthusiastic, happy & more positive in life. They feel so good when they receive complements that they are looking younger & more vibrant.
The fact that many companies keep inviting me to conduct the stress management workshops regularly for their employees of all levels, proves that it is effective & helpful and the need of the day.
What was exceptional & special was that 2 young ladies that I had taught yoga and whom I had done counselling for had abandoned the idea of suicide and are very happy and have a new enthusiasm and zest for life, they are now married and well settled. They have got promotions as their efficiency had improved.

14 ) How would you compare Tibetan Rites to all the other forms of Yoga being practised ?
In a Tibetan yoga & meditation workshop you also learn praanayam, positive thinking and QiGong exercises along with 5 Tibetan Rites and meditation.
We have also included “Office yoga” which are a set of exercise you can do in the chair infront of the computer to take away pain & stiffness form your neck, shoulders, back & whole body in just 7 minutes.
Tibetan Yoga works on all the 4 systems of our body – respiratory system, cardeo vascular system, digestive system and the nervous system.
As compared to other yoga &  exercise routines :
* You make only one time payment of fees and then no repeat payment.
* You do not have to commute to a class to practise Tibetan 5 Rites. You can do these in the comfort of your home or office within minutes.
* You do not have to buy expensive exercise equipment or clothing.
* The results are felt within a few days of doing the Rites, praanayam & meditation.
* You don’t have to be supervised to do the exercises as you have the CD to help you.
* For companies this works out the best as they need to invest only 3 hours and very little money to reap huge benefits of more efficient , happier, relaxed and stress free work force,
