Online system for environmental clearance becomes operational on the
World Environment Day:
Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar calls for collective efforts
to promote sustainable development
Union Minister for Environment & Forests Prakash Javadekar, on the World Environment Day has said collective partnership of all stakeholders is needed to create environmental consciousness and promote sustainable development.
“Today is World Environment day: Let’s take oath to put collective efforts to make the Environment Safe and Sustainable. Let us preserve environment, let us secure the future’ he tweeted ahead of addressing the World Environment Day function in the national capital today.
Speaking on the occasion, Javadekar threw light upon the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for changing the nomenclature of the Ministry to “Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change”. He assured that India would play a proactive role in the International events related to environment in the days to come.
The new system of online submission of applications for environmental clearance, announced earlier became operational on the World Environment Day today. The Minister said it will promote transparency in governance and also speed up the process. He further added that no applications would be entertained for clearances through any route other than the online system from 1st July, 2014.
During the function, the Environment Minister released a special poster on the Islands and Coastal Areas of India. The Minister also released various books and reference guides related to environment and wild-life which included books on animal and plant discoveries, Fifth National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity, India’s First Biennial Update Report to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and a book on Indian Mammals, among others.
The Guest of Honour Prof. M.S. Swaminathan in his key-note address gave an overview of the problems pertaining to the coastline eco-system in the country and its implications on the environment and the people at large.
Earlier in the day, the Environment Minister had sent saplings of trees to all parliamentarians to evoke a positive response towards environmental protection.
