Nominations for the 4thStar Global Indian Music Academy (GiMA) Awards

The Global Indian Music Academy (GiMA) today announced its nominees for the Star GiMA Awards 2013. With three successful editions of the Awards, the Academy moves into its 4th edition with a promising bank of artistes in its list of nominees. Having partnered with leaders of the Indian Music industry, GiMA is a pioneering effort by Wizcraft International Entertainment to recognize Indian music that transcends genres in the country.

The nominees are voted by GiMAs jury panel which comprises some of the most respected artistes in the country. As per a mandate by KPMG, the official auditors for the Awards, all jurors do not adjudicate on categories/genres in which they are in contention or are associated with professionally.

Among major films that were released during the eligibility period of the Awards, leading the film-music based nominations are Barfi, Talaash, Cocktail followed by Student of the Year, Ishaqzaade and Jab Tak Hain Jaan. Barfi deserves a special applause for holding 7 nominations this year.

Music Director Pritam has been nominated for 6 awards. These include Best Music Arranger and Programmer, Best Background Score, 2 nominations for Best Music Director along with Vishal and Shekhar, Best Music Director, Best Film Song and 2 Best Film Album for Cocktail and Barfi. Speaking on the occasion, Pritam said, “It is a great honor to have 6 nominations at GiMA this year. In the last 3 years, GiMA has created a fantastic platform for musicians across genres to be celebrated on one stage and I look forward to this year’s celebrations.”

Star Duo Vishal and Shekhar have received 4 nominations this year for their outstanding work in the movie “Student of the Year” and the foot tapping song “Radha”.

Singing sensation Shreya Ghosal has garnered 4 nominations, three spots in the Best Duet Category and one for Best Playback Singer.

New to the film music scene, Shalmali Kholgade has 4 nominations including Best Music Debut as well as Best Playback Singer (Female) for the popular song “Pareshaan”  from Ishaqzaade.

In the Film-Music genre, for Best Lyricist, prominent names come to play with nominations for Gulzar (Saans), Javed Akhtar (Jee le Zarra and Jiya Lage Naa) and Irshad Kamil (Tumhi Ho Bandhu).

Speaking on the occasion, Javed Akhtar said, “Musicians are an integral part of Indian Cinema, often being discreet but playing a very important role behind the scenes. It is institutions like GiMA that create an opportunity for musicians to have their well-deserved glory and I think the music industry is very glad to have such a great platform.”

Debut artistes, Ska Vengers and Spud in the Box have made a grand entry having won several nominations in the non-film music category. Spud in the Box led with nominations in the Best Music Debut, Best Indie Song, Best Pop Album as well as Best Rock Album for their album “Attention Please” followed bySkaVengerswho havemultiple nominations for their album- SkaVengers LP.

Commenting on the Awards, acclaimed Indian violinist and composer Dr. L. Subramaniam said, “I’m delighted to be nominated for a GiMA again this year. In the past years GiMA has grown in stature and I’m proud to have been a part of it since its inception. It is a wonderful platform that represents, promotes and recognises all types of music.”

Having created waves in the music scene, popular songs from the album Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2 including Husna, Madari, Sathi Salaam, Dum Dum have earned nominations in several categories including the Best Fusion Album, Best Folk Album and Best Indie Song. The Electronic Dance Music track category, which was added this year, features Arjun Vagale, Madhav Shorey and Blot! Featuring Vasundhara Vee as nominees.

Music Maestros hold elemental prominence in the Non Film Music Scene with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Ustad Zakir Hussain leading the nominations in the Best Hindustani Classical Instrumental Album category. Also the Best Ghazal Album category includes names like Ustad Ghulam Ali, Ustad Rashid Khan, Hariharan, Talat Aziz and the late Jagit Singh. Noted singer Anup Jalota, best known for his performances in Hindi devotional music, stays true to his forte and has garnered2 nominations in Best Devotional Album Category.
