Inspired by the Zulu kingdom KwaZulu Natal of South Africa, Malini Agarwalla’s “KwaZulu” collection had all the vibrant colour, beauty and style of the country at Lakmé fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012.
The exotic bags with geometric embroidery and beadwork so typical of the African region also came alive on handbags along with coordinated accessories like jewellery.
The jewellery was opulent in size and design as collars with rectangle extensions, dangling baubles with masks painted on them; giant oval pendants, multi strands of wooden beads and a choker of two strands of gigantic beads were stunning. Flat “U” shaped beaded neckpiece and another with the question mark shape were unconventional. Bags were either clutch, or shoulder bags to match the footwear which was wedges, or club heels style.
The finale celebrity line up was impressive as Malini had Vidya Malavade, Maria Gorretti, Mini Mathur, Sharmila Khanna, Madhu Shah and Shaheen Abbas walk the ramp to loud cheers; wearing giant gold necklaces – some resembling armour plates, while others had chains streaming down from huge collars. All the ladies carried leopard print clutches, bags or duffels.
For accessories with a lot of colour and style the “KwaZulu” collection by Malini Agarwalla had a very exotic line to offer.
PAYAL KAPOOR RECREATED HISTORY ON THE RAMP WITH HER FUSION LINE OF GARMENTS
Payal Kapoor’s dazzling Summer/Resort collection took the audience on a whirl wind tour of domes from the Moghul Era to the Mediterranean and South Asian countries which were her inspirations at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012.
Geometrics played an important role in the line of garments titled “The Wanderer” with delicate pearl appliqués, embossing sequin detailing and dazzling diamantes came together to create a gypsy element for the intricate garments.
Skirts, halters, tank tops, dresses, gowns, boleros and blouses glided down the catwalk in a blend of traditional Indian and contemporary shapes. Chiffon, satin, georgette with hints of tie and dye touches gave a gentle fluid tone to the collection.
Colours played a beautiful symphony as pistachio, ivory, salmon and indigo lit up the ramp under the arc lights for the very feminine saris and fusion wear.
The show opened with a white embroidered sheath followed by a rouched yoke satin harem pants, teamed with a sheer chiffon blouse and bolero.
Ruffled frills appeared for long gowns, while the shaded look was used for elegant gowns and saris. The one shoulder georgette batwing mini, the pistachio tie and dye kaftan, the peach sequin sheeting balloon pants and the dusty green tiered georgette long smock were great cocktail options. The final white lehenga, tiny choli shimmered with detailing and the dupatta with gotta border revealed the inspiration of the designer.
