LEARNING TO FLY FROM BANGALORE WON THE USHA ULTIMATE DELHI-GHT 2012 FRISBEE TOURNAMENT ON THE 18TH OF NOVEMBER

16 TEAMS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOUGHT FOR TOP HONOURS

 

The Usha Ultimate Delhi-ght Frisbee Tournament, sponsored by Usha International – one of India’s leading consumer durables companies, concluded at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. In the final match of the second edition of the tournament, Learning to Fly defeated Four Play (Chennai) 11-6 on Sunday.

International Ultimate Frisbee legend Brodie Smith along with the Delhi Ultimate Frisbee Tournament Organiser Komal Mehra, gave away the prizes to the winners.

On Saturday semi-final matches, Learning to Fly (Bangalore) thrashed Stray Dogs in Sweaters (Delhi) 9-2 and Four Play (Chennai) beat Spin Storms (Auroville-Mumbai) 11-7 at the same venue.

This is the first time that Ultimate Frisbee (a game played using a flying disc) was sponsored by Usha. Usha had invited Brodie Smith, international Ultimate Frisbee legend to India for promoting the sport. A total of 16 teams from across India participated in this three day tournament.

The teams include Storm Chasers (Mumbai), Stray Dogs in Sweaters, Sexy Cats in Tuxedos, Metro Delhi International School (all from Delhi), Dream Catchers (Ahmedabad), Learning to Fly, DOD Ultimate (Bangalore) Sher Singhs (Chandigarh), Four Play (Chennai) and Flying Spirits (Pune) who contested for the top honour of the Usha Ultimate Deli-ght tournament.

The tournament was based on a Swiss Draw format, which ensures that teams are ranked quickly according to their real strength and play close matches against opponents of similar strength. One of the unique aspects of Ultimate Frisbee is, both women and men share the same field, play together and make their contributions to the team.

Ultimate Frisbee is the fastest growing team sport in the world. Internationally, it is well developed, having rules and regulations to present a 60-minute, highly energetic and impactful sporting event. Apart from its competitive nature, Ultimate as a sport is fun and promotes cooperation and communication among youth. It is self–refereed by players and all decisions are resolved through a quick discussion, bringing in a strong spirit of sportsmanship, competitiveness and respect.

Speaking of the event, Mr. Siddharth Shriram, Co-Chairman, Usha International said, “ As an organisation we have been sponsoring sports, culture and other activities over many years on a sustained basis. We have now chosen to promote the game of Ultimate Frisbee   because of its positive attributes making for a healthy and sports loving nation. We hope others will join us in giving this game a fillip so that this meaningful sport can strike firm roots in our country.”
