JNPT and Maharashtra Maritime Board sign MOU for development of a major satellite port off Dahanu

Development of satellite a  Port for JNPT off Vadhavan Point South of Dahanu Port on the coast of Maharashra will help generate employment for 1 lakh people in the Konkan Region said Union Shipping Minster, Shri Nitin Gadkari in Mumbai today.

Speaking at a function organised for entering into a MOU between JNPT and Maharashtra Maritime Board.  Shri Nitin Gadkari said his Ministry is also talking to CIDCO for provding low cost housing to the people who will be working  in the new port.

The Minister also said a major port was being built in the country after 30 years and he said the port will be constructed without disturbing any habitations,  land or forests as it is being built four nautical   miles into the sea.  The Minister also said that an International Maritime University was being  set up in the Ratnagiri and Jindal Group had already given 100 acre of land for this purpose.   Shri Gadkari also said that the ministry was  in the process of finalizing plans for the Development of river ports in the country.  He also said the government was determined to end the pollution of the sea and it  was committed to  the cleaning  of the coastal areas in Mumbai.  Mr. Gadkari said the government was developing ship repair yard at Kandala, Kochi and Andaman and Nicobar to minimize the cost of repairing ships abroad.  Mr. Gadkari also said Railways had finalized a  corporation to link up rail heads with major ports and they have taken up the job in right earnest.

Today for the purpose of development of the New Major Port in Dahanu Taluka, off Vadhawan Point, JNPT and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) on behalf of Government of Maharashtra agreed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding.  The MOU was signed by CMD of JNPT, Shri Neeraj Bansal and the CEO of Maharashtra Maritime Board, Shri Ashish Sharma  in the presence of the Shipping Minister, Shri Nitin Gadkari and the Maharashtra Chief Minister ,Shri Devendra Fadnavis

The Port would be established as a Corporate Port under Companies Act 2013 on the lines of Kamarajar Port Ltd., Ennore. JNPT would have an equity share not exceeding 74% and Government of Maharashtra would have an equity share not exceeding 26% in the new Port Company. The new Port could be developed as a land lord Port with the basic Port infrastructure being developed by the Port Company and the berths, terminals and associated facilities being developed with private participation on PPP mode.

This location has advantage that it is clear of fishing activities, deep water depth contour of more than 20 metres is only 4.5 NM from the coast and 2.5 NM from the rocky patches, good rail and road connectivity nearby and main and importantly, there will not be necessity for large land acquisition.
