THE CHEVROLET 3rd GLOBAL INDIAN MUSIC ACADEMY (GiMA) AWARDS ANNOUNCES ITS NON-FILM MUSIC NOMINATIONS
~ GiMA 2012 Nominations recognize music veterans & stalwarts like Pt. Jasraj, Ustad Rashid Khan, A.R Rahman and Sonu Nigaam along with young artistes like Papon, Advaita and Sky Rabbit ~
Mumbai: The biggest annual celebration of Indian Music, the Chevrolet 3rd Global Indian Music Academy (GiMA) Awards today announced its nominees in the non-film music category for its 3rd edition. An initiative by Wizcraft International Entertainment, GiMA is a pioneering effort to recognize Indian music, transcending genres in the country giving the music industry a unified platform to celebrate its talent.
GiMA is the ONLY Music Awards platform with a voting process based on a peer-to-peer recognition. Nominees are selected by a Jury panel of over 30 eminent members (Music & Film industry) and later presented to the GiMA Academy for the final voting. The illustrious Jury members for the Non-film category include Anup Jalota, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Ehsaan Noorani, Hariharan, Ila Arun, Lesle Lewis, Loy Mendonsa, Pankaj Udhas, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, Raju Singh, Ram Sampath , Roop Kumar Rathod, Salim Merchant, Shantanu Moitra, Suresh Wadkar, Swanand Kirkire, Taufiq Qureshi, Shashi Vyas, Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Rashid Khan. The Academy comprises over 300 members from the music & film industry encompassing industry stalwarts, music directors, producers, lyricists, singers, technicians, composers and leaders in the music business. The Academy’s votes are then tabulated by KPMG who are the process auditors for GiMA, after which the winners will be determined.
The 12 awards in the Non-film music category include Best Music Debut, Best Pop Album, Best Rock Album, Best Pop/Rock Single, Best Devotional Album, Best Ghazal Album, Best Folk Album, Best Fusion Album, Best Hindustani Classical Album (Vocal & Instrumental), Best Carnatic Classical Album (Vocal & Instrumental).
Javed Akhtar, noted Poet-Lyricist and Advisory Board member for GiMA said, “Today, GiMA has evolved into a major platform for the Indian Music Industry that brings together the entire fraternity to honor and celebrate musical talent across various genres. This year, there is an interesting mix of nominees and I congratulate GiMA as they embark upon yet another musical journey.”
Shankar Mahadevan’s sons Shivam & Siddharth Mahadevan have been nominated in the Best Debut category along with the music director Gulraj Singh for the album ‘Ganaraj Adhiraj’.
Agnee leads the nominations with three songs in the Best Pop/Rock Single category – ‘Hello Andheron’ featuring Aditi Singh Sharma, ‘I Believe’ featuring Parikrama and Shilpa Rao, and ‘Manmani’ featuring Raghu Ram. Agnee will compete with Sonu Nigam and Jermaine Jackson’s single ‘This is it’.
The big contenders in the Best Pop Album include ‘Coke studio’, ‘Rangeele’ by Kailash Kher and ‘Story so Far’ by Papon (first Hindi album). Euphoria’s new album ‘Item’ along with Advaita’s album ‘The Silent Sea’ and Sky Rabbit’s debut Album ‘Sky Rabbit’ will see all battle it out for the Best Rock Album.
Music maestro A.R Rahman has been nominated for 2 albums in the Best Fusion Album category along with Karsh Kale’s album ‘Cinema’ and Anushka Shankar’s album ‘Traveller’. Legendary Pt. Jasraj has received 2 nominations in the Hindustani Classical category, while Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia has been nominated for Hindustani Instrumental category for the album ‘Flute Deity’
The big contenders in Best Carnatic Classical album include music veteran Dr.L. Subramaniam for his album ‘Innovations’ and Ganesh- Kumaresh for ‘Ragapravaham’
