Ghents joins Mons, European Capital of Culture 2015
Mons (Bergen) is following in the footsteps of Antwerp, Brussels and Bruges as European Capital of Culture. Throughout the year, partner institutions and cities, associations and artists will join forces to present 300 events in Mons, the capital of the Hainaut region.
The city has been given a young and fresh makeover with two concert halls (Arsonic and Alhambra), the MICX conference centre and the railway station, which connects the new neighborhoods with the historical city centre.
Cultural organizations are organizing an exceptional series of concerts, plays, film screenings and so much more. In April, an astonishing five new museums are opening their doors in the city, displaying art collections and presenting valuable local heritage in optimal conditions.
No less than 18 surrounding cities have joined the Mons 2015 development project, including Ghent. The Dirty Monitor collective organized the opening party in Mons and also took part in the Ghent Light Festival. The City of Ghent also supports the ‘L’autre hiver’ performance by LOD music theatre, which will premiere in Bergen, and our city will be present during the event with its successful project ‘123-piano’.
