Ekta Kapoor: An Icon in the Making

Ekta Kapoor: An Icon in the Making

At the age of 25, when most young people are still trying to decode the architecture of their lives, Ekta Kapoor had already been crowned the princess of primetime television. A fearless producer with risk-taking abilities, she took on the challenge of presenting an edgier way of storytelling in films like LSD, Once upon a time in Mumbai, Shor in the city and Ragini MMS and met with phenomenal success. Today, Ekta Kapoor dons many hats as she wins audiences with her work on television and in movies. Her sharp formidable style in narrating different stories to her audiences has made Ekta Kapoor one of the top contenders of India’s Prime Icon, a brand new show on BIG CBS PRIME and Bloomberg TV India that aims to select the ultimate icon for the nation.

After the phenomenal success of last year’s biggest hit The Dirty Picture, actress Vidya Balan was all praises for Ekta Kapoor. She said, “Hats off to Ekta for the kind of work she is doing. Every film of hers is so different and I have great admiration for her. We both started our careers together in Hum Paanch and we have come a long way…God’s been kind.”

Such is the aura surrounding Ekta Kapoor that adult film actress, Sunny Leone who will be seen in her next venture – Ragini MMS 2 is completely in awe of her. She said, “I think Ekta is a very bold filmmaker. I watched The Dirty Picture and was mesmerized. I just got a full narration of the story (Ragini MMS 2). I think some of the scene in the film are going to leave the entire country shell-shocked!”

But is Ekta Kapoor really as intimidating as the industry believes her to be? Ekta’s brother and actor Tushar Kapoor cleared the air as he elaborated, “Ekta is such a good leader and such a hard taskmaster where her work is concerned because of her professional qualities that people don’t realize her softer side. Her friendships with people, her emotional side, which is her personality outside of her work area is something people are not aware of so I think people relate her professional skills to being somebody who would be a hard taskmaster outside of work. But that’s not the case. Ekta’s very afraid of heights and darkness. She’s afraid of helicopters. She’s also constantly donating and doing things for the old. She’s always donating things to the poor old women and they depend on her for small favours and Ekta keeps pampering them. I think that’s a very kind gesture and that comes from her heart!”

For someone as talented and determined as Ekta, the sky really is the limit. Be the hard-nut businesswoman on the softer friend and sympathetic human being, Ekta clearly has the makings of India’s Prime Icon. But will be able to beat the rest and prove her mettle?
