The actor  plays the titular character of David Copperfield in his next, The personal History of David Copperfield.

December, 2020: We have seen him bewitch the audience with his roles in Lion, Slumdog Millionaire and The Man Who Knew Infinity, Dev Patel is here now to tickle the funny bones with The Personal History of David Copperfield.

When asked about his take on Dickens and the book, Dev patel admitted, “ To be honest — I know it’s blasphemous to say this — but I actually wasn’t ( a fan of Dickens). I could appreciate his work for sure, but I was sort of force-fed it in school “

Dev Patel could relate to the character of David who find himself transitioning from what he was for the people who now surround him. He said that  “ When I read the script, I said oh I can really relate to this guy, like I understand what it is like to feel like an outsider, constantly have that imposter syndrome. It is about a young man accepting his heritage his struggle and … you know even in school I was always the class clown kinda doing impressions of the math teacher “

David Copperfield is a rather modern take on the Victorian Novel. A lifelong fan of Charles Dickens, Armando Iannucci the Director had a creative spark a few years ago while re-reading the author’s acclaimed eighth novel, David Copperfield, which was first published in 1850. “I thought, ‘I want to make this as a movie,’” says Iannucci. “It felt so contemporary, but also because the adaptations I’ve seen are all so serious and centered on the drama and the plot. There is a lot of plot and drama, but to me those are the least interesting things about the story.”

“There are moments of almost slapstick comedy, like when David joins the law firm and has to negotiate his way around the creaking floorboards. And when he falls in love with Dora and imagines seeing her face everywhere, even in the clouds. It’s a very surreal, yet very real book. I wanted to get that across in the movie.” Iannucci delves further.

PVR Pictures to release “The Personal History of David Copperfield” directed by Armando Iannucci’s starring Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie, Ben Whishaw and Hugh Laurie in theatres on the 11th of December, 2020.
