DELHI TEAMS ENTER SEMIS IN ‘USHA ULTIMATE DELHI-GHT 2012 FRISBEE TOURNAMENT’ AT JAWAHAR LAL NEHRU STADIUM

STRAY DOGS IN SWEATERS AND LOONEY TUNES WIN THEIR QUARTER-FINAL MATCHES; SPORTS MINISTER SUPPORTS THE NEW SPORT

 

Delhi teams Stray Dogs in Sweaters (SDIS) and Looney Tunes entered the semi-finals of ongoing Usha Ultimate Delhi-ght 2012 Frisbee Tournament, being played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.

SDIS defeated another Delhi team Sexy Cats in Tuxedos 10-6 in a tough quarter-final match. In another quarter-final match, Looney Tunes thrashed Rajasthan team Desert Dreamers 11-1 at JLN Stadium. The final match will be played at 3:00 pm on Sunday at the same venue.

Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Jitendra Singh came at JLN Stadium and saw the fastest growing sport of the world. Mr Singh met Brodie Smith, international frisbee expert, and talked about the sport. He appreciated Usha International for promoting this amazing sport.

This is the first time that Ultimate Frisbee (a game played using a flying disc) is being sponsored by Usha. Usha has invited Brodie Smith, international Ultimate Frisbee legend to India for promoting the sport. A total of 16 teams from across India are participating in this three day tournament.

The teams include Storm Chasers (Mumbai), Stray Dogs in Sweaters, Sexy Cats in Tuxedos, Metro Delhi International School (all from Delhi), Dream Catchers (Ahmedabad), Learning to Fly, DOD Ultimate (Bangalore) Sher Singhs (Chandigarh), Four Play (Chennai) and Flying Spirits (Pune) are contesting for the top honour of the Usha Ultimate Delhi-ght 2012 tournament.

Quarter-Final Matches’ Result: Looney Tunes (Delhi) bt Desert Dreamers (Rajasthan) 11-1; Sher Singhs (Chandigarh) bt Friskids (Surat) 11-2; Ridiculous (all India) bt Frisbeats (Delhi) 9-8; Surat Strikers bt Nations United (Delhi) 7-6; Learning to Fly (Bangalore) bt Dream Catchers (Ahmedabad) 11-4; Stray Dogs in Sweaters (Delhi) bt Sexy Cats in Tuxedos (Delhi) 10-6; Spin Storms (Auroville-Mumbai) bt Flying Spirits (Pune) 11-2; Fourplay (Chennai) bt Trailblazers (Surat) 10-5.

The tournament is based on a Swiss Draw format, which ensures that teams are ranked quickly according to their real strength and play close matches against opponents of similar strength. One of the unique aspects of Ultimate Frisbee is, both women and men share the same field, play together and make their contributions to the team.

Ultimate Frisbee is the fastest growing team sport in the world. Internationally, it is well developed, having rules and regulations to present a 60-minute, highly energetic and impactful sporting event. Apart from its competitive nature, Ultimate as a sport is fun and promotes cooperation and communication among youth. It is self–refereed by players and all decisions are resolved through a quick discussion, bringing in a strong spirit of sportsmanship, competitiveness and respect.
