BOLLYWOOD COMPOSER, SHAMIR TANDON INVITED TO COMPOSE FOR THE PRETIGIOUS WOODWIND ORCHESTRA, ‘SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE’
Acclaimed Bollywood composer, Shamir Tandon is popular not only in India, having recently been invited by the prestigious US Woodwind orchestra, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble to compose a piece that is symbolic of India. The Orchestra will be travelling to about 30 countries next year, having already had their first performance at Minneapolis earlier this month and have invited composers from across the world to compose pieces that are symbolic of their home country for the orchestra to perform.
Shamir has put together a 15-minute piece for the orchestra to perform. The piece that he has composed for the orchestra blends together different genres of music from across the country including Middle Eastern influences, folk music, Raag and Bollywood. The composer travelled to Minneapolis to attend the first concert that flagged off the one year tour of the orchestra where the first performance of his composition was met with a standing ovation. While it is currently being performed by the orchestra who has started travelling across the US, the composition will eventually be recorded and officially released.
Speaking on the honour bestowed upon him by the orchestra, Shamir Tandon said, “For performing artists, it’s always a great honor when our works are appreciated beyond home ground. It gives us an opportunity to look beyond the routine and expand our horizons. It was heartening to see a 60 piece woodwind band ensemble playing our composition to an entire cross over audience”
Shamir is well-known among the music industry for his work in several Bollywood films including award winning film, Page-3, Corporate and Traffic Signal. He has under his belt the credit of scoring music for 2 national award winning Indian films, more than a dozen commercially successful feature films and over a 50 advertising films in a very short span. He is also known for his collaborative efforts with artists from round the globe like Enrique Iglesias, the boy band – Blue, Robbie Williams and Australian cricketer, Bret Lee.
When asked about Shamir Tandons visist, conductor Dr. Matthew George said, “Shamir’s visit was greatly enjoyed by the audience in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. His kind demeanor and clearly articulated views and representation of music in India were very well received by the audience. He was a smash! I felt his presence at the concert hall certainly elevated the performance and the response from the audience of his work was immediate and enthusiastic.”
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be traveling to India from January 12 – 24, 2013 and will be going to Delhi, Jaipur, Gwailor, and Agra.
About Shamir Tandon: While Shamir has enjoyed a prolific music career, he was originally a management graduate working as a cost accountant and had spent a considerable amount of time running multinational music labels. On hearing this, the University of St. Thomas requested Shamir to give some of their senior students a lecture on the business of music.
