92.7 BIG FM BANGALORE LAUNCHES BIG GREEN GANESHA 2012 WITH PRIYANKA UPENDRA

Bangalore,  92.7 BIG FM, India’s No. 1 FM radio network and Broadcaster of the Year at the Golden Mikes, today kicked off the Bangalore leg of BIG GREEN GANESHA, marking its fifth successful year of nurturing a better environment through the pioneering concept. Lending further credibility to the property this year is none other than actor Priyanka Upendra, who has come on board to support the initiative and ensure further awareness, excitement and participation in the green cause, while worshipping one of our favourite Gods, Lord Ganesha! The property has Bharathi Cement as sponsors.

Launched in 2006 by 92.7 BIG FM, the initiative is aimed at creating social consciousness towards making one of India’s largest and most popular festivals better and more ecologically sound. In Karnataka, the initiative will help generate awareness in the cities of Bangalore, Mangalore and Mysore.

Drawing attention to the fact that most commonly available idols are created from non-degradable material and the paints used contain a high amount of toxins, BIG Green Ganesha has helped create understanding and gained steady momentum during the last four years by creating a sense of responsibility among communities and delivering significant value to its partners. This year’s campaign is being launched by means of a watchword ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya, Dharti Mata Morya’ in a crusade that protects planet earth while seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha.

Speaking on the occasion Priyanka Upendra said, “The BIG Green Ganesha campaign is the perfect way to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha and keep the environment clean and green. Ganesha idols made of plaster of Paris seriously damage the ecological balance of the water bodies. I am honoured of be a part of BIG Green Ganesha 2012 started by 92.7 BIG FM. They have been running this campaign for 5 years and are doing a brilliant job of educating people and making them aware about the benefits of adopting eco-friendly Ganeshas.

The actress, married to Kannada cinema director, actor and script writer Upendra, is passionate about matters related to ecological consciousness and has always been at the forefront of socially relevant causes in the city. 92.7 BIG FM will organise a paper collection drive across 21 centres in Bangalore, 5 in Mysore and 5 in Mangalore, making paper Ganeshas from the collections and putting them up in prominent city malls. The drive will culminate with the BIG GREEN GANESHA Awards, which will be launched on the 19th of September 2012. Radio Jockeys accompanied by top celebrities will travel across cities and announce the names of winners based on measures they’ve taken to create ecologically sound Ganeshas.

Sahas, which has been actively involved in finding solutions to problems related to solid waste.is the NGO partner for the Green Ganesha Campaign.

While 13 paper Ganesha statues were put up last year as part of the BGG campaign, this year will witness the erection of 30 Ganesha pandals (special temporary structures) across six major cities and a number of other smaller ones. Cities included in this campaign are Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Indore, Surat, Vizag, Baroda, Mangalore, Gwalior, Mysore, Sholapur and Goa.

Commenting on this campaign Mr. Rabe T. Iyer, Business Head, 92.7 BIG FM said, “The launch of the BIG Green Ganesha Campaign demonstrates our commitment towards the environment. We believe that if India comes together, the little things we do can be both enjoyable and help make a positive impact on the environment. We are confident that the initiative will be a huge success with the support of lakhs of Indians.”

With strong messaging and a firm principle, the campaign has generated awareness among 1.5 crore people each year. Over 200 celebrities lent their support to the cause last year and their involvement has helped spread the word.
